This 800 SF historically designated brick home had a decrepit wooden structure attached to its rear where a new, sensible, Boulder Landmarks Board approved 1300 SF addition took its place.
The new addition was designed to Boulder Green points standards, ICF foundation, 2X6 @ 24 O.C. framing. Due to the narrow nature of the lot, and the existing structures encroachment on current setbacks the resultant addition had to make up for its predecessors "shortcomings." The solution was a long and slender layout. This 1 - 1/2 story addition added a full basement, spacious family room on the main level, and private master suite on the 2nd 1/2 story.
The addition is a simple contemporary expression of the traditional architecture found in the original brick structure. By carrying datum lines, mirroring porthole elements, and imitating roof forms, the massing created is that of a traditional structure found in Boulders historic, Mapleton Hill neighborhood, yet the clean and organized lines and detailing will express its contemporary nature. The new structure begins to tie into its existing predecessor by borrowing some of its simpler elements.
