Solar Panel and How to Decide Which Are Right For You

Solar panels have grown in popularity over the years as they are more affordable and tax credits help with the cost. There are many reasons why homeowners choose to invest in solar panels including energy savings and independence, carbon footprint reduction, as well as possible increase in property value.  Nowadays, there are many choices when trying to decide on which solar panels are the best for you, and it can be a bit overwhelming if you are not familiar with them.

There are three types of solar panels:

Monocrystalline: This is the most popular type of solar panel.  It is the most efficient and requires a smaller amount of roof space, and it has a long lifespan. It is also the most expensive; however, due to its power output it might save users money over time.

Polycrystalline: This is not as popular because it uses older technology. It is more affordable than the Monocrystalline panels, but it’s less efficient and requires more roof space.

Thin-Film: This type of panel is the most affordable option, but is the least efficient, requires more space, and it isn’t typically used for residential projects.

There are many companies that offer solar panels including SunPower and Tesla (Monocrystalline). SunPower has more options as well as longer warranties compared to Tesla; however, Tesla solar panels can be more reasonably priced, and their look is sleeker with an all-black low profile.

Rooftop solar tiles can be a good alternative to solar panels. They are most beneficial when used in new construction or major house improvements/renovations as most roofs will have to be replaced with solar tiles. They are currently more expensive than solar panels alone, but in the end the cost depends on the size of the roof as well as the energy output needed (not every single tile will need to be a solar shingle, some of them will be regular tiles). Manufactures such as Luma Solar and Tesla offer solar tiles/shingles. Tesla roof shingles might be pricier than others; however, homeowners might choose them because of their seamless look as well and the brand name.
